Islamic Culture and Muslim Minorities from the perspective of Food Practices in South Korea

Food practices involve everyday life aspects of eating food, the ways in which humans use food, including from how it is selected, obtained, to who prepares it, serves, and eats it, and the place. The relationship between food and culture negotiates our identities, cultures and environments.

South Korea is a multi-religious society, where Islam has a status of minority religion. Islam and Muslim are not widely known. In this context, Halal food and Halal food practices are assigned different meanings in Korea. There are misconceptions, ignorance, stereotyping and confusion on definition and practices of halal food and Muslims’ food in terms of place, ingredients, preparation, and ‘who’ can cook and eat it.

In this regard, this seminar aims to discuss Islam, Muslims and food practices in everyday life in the Korean context.
